PPetite in frame but big on creativity, New Jersey pop artist Andrea Ramirez started her artistic career in the fashion world. She began by studying fashion design in NYC. After realizing how restricting fashion design could be to her artistic vision, she moved on to textiles and textile surface design which allowed for more room of creative expression. After constant prompting from fellow artists to put her design skills on paper, Andrea did just that and her artwork was born. Using design techniques from her days in fashion design, Andrea’s work is highly stylized and vibrant in color. Her characteristic use of rich color combinations and bold graphic lines never fail to impact the viewer.
Andrea’s philosophy about art is that it always doesn’t have to be complicated in content to be effective. Playful and fun use of bright colors and bold lines can invoke as much emotion as any complicated piece of work. Andrea has exhibited locally and nationally, eventually catching the attention of legendary Cpop Gallery in Detroit, which led to a stellar group show opening which drew a crowd of hundreds in one night. Andrea is currently working on commissioned work and is doing CD covers and show flyers for local tri-state area bands.
Andrea Ramirez was born in Costa Rica in 1974 and lived in the town of Port Limon during her early childhood years. The colorful vibrancy of this tropical Caribbean town can be seen in the colorful scheme of Andrea's art work. Later in her childhood Andrea's parents moved to New Jersey where she had to adapt to her new environments and language. Living close to New York City Andrea would often take trips with her father to New York where she learned to appreciate the culture of New York City which was at its pop height in the early 80's with the popularity of pop artists like Andy Warhol and Basquiat. This colorful pop culture world reminded her of the vibrant Carribean town she left behind.
Never forgetting her early childhood roots and falling in love with her new chaotic city living Andrea gained the tools of imagination she needed to create her own unique style of pop art. Her combination of rich vibrant colors and the loud bold lines in her work is a blueprint of Andrea's colorful background.
